Happy Weekend…

tgifHere we are again at the end of a successful week. This is also the end of Unit 1; therefore, Monday will begin Unit 2. It hardly seems possible that the first unit has come to an end.

It has been a busy week at NJHS. Today a fire/evacuation drill was put into place. It seems as though the students took these drills very seriously and followed the protocol to the letter. Due to all of the recent happenings in schools these days, it is reassuring to know that the safety of our students has been planned, considered, and enacted.

Today was the Summative Vocabulary Quiz over Unit 1 vocabulary words. This 100% CLubgrade will appear on RDS soon (Standard L.8.2). Monday students will receive the vocabulary words for Unit 2. All vocabulary for these quizzes will consist of literary terms that have been aligned to both the Common Core and Indiana standards. These are all terms that will be used, not only, this year but in high school and beyond. Most Mondays they will complete vocabulary and usually there will be two practice quizzes on the Fridays before the summative quiz. If a student receives a 100% their name is posted on the board and incentives are given.

netbookStudents need to have their Netbooks CHARGED and ready to go every day! The Netbooks are an integral part of the ELA instruction, so please make every effort to see that they are ready to use.

The Summative Assessment for Unit 1 will be given next Wednesday. While this is a very important component of the final grade, this is not something to worry about. If the student has paid attention to daily instruction, participation, and summativepractice, they should be more than ready for this assessment. Remember, it is not where we start but where we finish. With that said, there will be opportunities for reteaching and retesting before the grading period ends.

Next week is going to be a very important and busy week in 8th grade ELA classes. Stay tuned for further explanation. Try to rest and recharge over the weekend and be ready to hit the ground running on Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. I really like the fact you have thus blog. I think this will help Jacob as well as me out through the school year. Having a teenager means there is always great communication in the household.
