Personal Interest Story:

During the last round of WIN periods, I had the pleasure of taking a class called ‘Rock and Roll History’. I for one am a very big fan of that genre of music, so I was extremely excited to be a part of the class. The class was taught by a student who currently attends the University of Southern Indiana. He hiexplained to us many things about Rock and Roll, including the origin, the different styles, and the different artists within the genre. I learned that the beginning R&R artists were in ‘Big Bands’ and didn’t sound like much like Rock and Roll at all. But over time the many artists that followed evolved the music into what it is today. Older artists like The Who and Elvis Presley influenced many of the newer artists including Weezer and Green Day. There are also many styles of R&R. Some of these styles include Metal (like Metallica and ACDC), Grunge (like Nirvana), and Punk (like Green Day). I personally like Punk the most, because Green Day is my favorite band. We learned very much from the overall knowledge that the teacher used and the visual and audible aids that went along with it. It was better to learn, then hear the music we had just learned about, to understand the depth that came along with the music. I enjoyed the class very much. I would have taken it a second time, but unfortunately it was not available this time. I am sad that I can’t take the class again, but i am thankful that I could take a class that I was truly interested in.

We hope you enjoy these last few weeks of school before the Christmas break.

Book Summary:

The Great Gatsby

In the summer of 1922, a young Minnesota man by the name of Nick Carraway moves into New York to learn about the bond business. He rents a neighboring house in the West Egg District on Long Island next to the mysterious Jay Gatsby. Gatsby lives in a gigantic Gothic mansion, in which he throws extravagant parties every Saturday night.

Nick is different then any of the people around the area, he’s an educated Yale graduate with connections around in East Egg, the home to many upper class. One day, Nick drives out to East Egg for dinner with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and her husband, Tom, who was a classmate of Nick’s at Yale. Daisy and Tom introduce Nick to the young, beautiful Jordan Baker, whom Nick starts a romantic relationship with. Jordan lets Nick in on information about Tom and Daisy’s marriage: Tom has a secret affair with the married Myrtle Wilson, who lives in the valley of ashes. Soon after learning of this revelation  Nick travels with both, Tom and Myrtle, to an apartment in which the affair takes place for a party later that evening. As the night draws in Myrtle begins taunting Tom about Daisy, Tom not too pleased with this breaks  her nose.

As the summer rolls on Nick finally gets an invitation to one of Gatsby’s famous parties. Nick bumps into Jordan at the party where they both come face to face and meet the surprisingly young Jay Gatsby. After talking Gatsby requests to speak to Jordan alone where he reveals he knew Daisy back in Louisville, 1917. He reveals that him and Daisy used to be in love with each other, and that his wild lifestyle and parties are just simply to impress Daisy. Nick later learns about his mysterious neighbor through Jordan, and Gatsby asks him to invite Daisy for tea at Nick’s house without revealing Gatsby’s presence. After the odd reunion, Daisy and Gatsby rekindle their romance for one another.

After a short time, Tom grows very suspicious of Gatsby when a passionate glance to Daisy, noticed by Tom reveals the two’s love for each other. Despite his affair with Myrtle, Tom is outraged at the fact Daisy was unfaithful to him and forces the group into New York City where he confronts Gatsby at The Plaza Hotel. There Tom announces to Daisy that Gatsby is a criminal and his wealth comes from illegal activities. Daisy realizes that her faith is to Tom, and Tom purposely sends her back to East Egg with Gatsby, attempting to prove that Gatsby cannot hurt him.

When Nick, Jordan, and Tom drive through the valley of ashes, however, they discover that Gatsby’s car has killed Myrtle, Tom’s lover. They go back to Long Island, where Nick learns from Gatsby that Daisy was driving the car when it hit Myrtle, but that Gatsby is going to take the blame. The next day, Tom tells Myrtle’s husband, George, that Gatsby was the driver of the car. George, who has leaped to the conclusion that the driver of the car that killed Myrtle must have been her lover, finds Gatsby in the pool at his mansion and shoots him dead. He then shoots himself.

Nick stages a small funeral for Gatsby and ends his relationship with Jordan Baker. Afterwards, he moves back to the Midwest to escape a disgust feeling he feels for the people in Gatsby’s life. He realizes that Gatsby’s dream of Daisy was corrupted by money and lies, and that the American dream has disintegrated down, and is now nothing more than mere wealth.

Have a great day and go Huskies!!! -Chloe Cooper

Skills/Standards Learned:

*Today we learned about participles during DLR (Daily Language Review)! Participles are usually formed by adding -ed or -ing to a verb. Also, it functions as an adjective.

Mocking Jay Part 1

*Following her rescue from the awful Quarter Quell, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) awakes in disbelief  beneath the supposedly destroyed District 13. Her home, District 12, has been destroyed, and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) is now brainwashed by President Snow, and forced to say things he doesn’t agree with. At the same time, Katniss also finds out about a secret rebellion spreading throughout Panem. A rebellion that she must lead as the Mocking Jay, so the districts might never have to endear the pain of the Capital ever again. Mocking Jay Part 1 is an amazing movie that just came out around last week. It will have you hooked and leave you with suspense. I’ve already seen it twice and absolutely loved it!

As you all know Thanksgiving is on Thursday of this week! Thanksgiving is a special time of the year where we can be thankful for the yummy food we have, our warm houses, and most importantly our families. Getting together and spending time with family is one of my favorite things about Thanksgiving. Sure the home cooked meals are good, but there is nothing better than sharing it with your family. Happy Thanksgiving and I hope everyone has a wonderful break.

31 days until Christmas!

Favorite Book:

The book that I’m reading right now is called Insurgent, it is the second book in the Divergent seriesI love the whole Divergent series. In this book the Erudite, led by Eric, have invaded Candor headquarters, which is where the Dauntless have been staying, and they have shot everyone, including Tris, with a serum and gassed them to make them fall unconscious. Next, they started to take the Divergent people hostage, they know this because the divergent are immune to the serum and the gas so they are awake. Tris is surprised to discover that some of her own best friends are divergent too. Just like how her mom and dad used to be. Then, they kill some of the ones that are useless to them, But Tobias, Tris’s boyfriend, saves the day by shooting Eric in the foot and most of the divergent escape. But, later in that week the Erudite have started using the serum that are in the Dauntless to control them, and making them jump off the roof of the building by threes every two days until one of the divergent sacrifices themselves to Erudite headquarters. Who will sacrifice themselves to save the lives of hundreds of people? It all rests on a single person. Will anyone do it? I guess that you’re going to have to find that out for me.

Holidays: Thanksgiving is our next big holiday, and it’s only ONE WEEK AWAY!! It’s also great because we will only have three days of school next week, which means a FOUR DAY WEEKEND!!YES!!!
